Let's Go Digging

As you may have notice if you want my links closely, I'm now into Digg. Digg.com is kinda billed as Slashdot without the top-heavy management that filters stories. So most of the stories are geek-related, but then again some are just random, weird stories. Anyone (who has signed up) can write up links to stories, and if somebody enjoys it, they "digg" it. If it's really cool, it'll show up on the front page of Digg. Check it out to find some really interesting stuff.

The Google Image Game

Here's a cool thing I just found on Digg.com: The Google Image Game. A cool guy made a program to take a Google Image search and make a collage of the images. But this twist is you have to guess what the keyword that created the collage is. It's pretty fun to guess what all the images have in common. My only beef is that the program doesn't give you the answer, it just gives you the first letter of the answer.

The Great Format War

Haha, now this is good. Here's somebody talking about the upcoming war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD:

"Now we are engaged in a great format war, testing whether the next generation of packaged entertainment ... can long endure. We acknowledge that the great battlefield of that war is not here, but across the Pacific. ... Yet, retailers call for the elevation of compromise over conflict and a future for all behind a unified format. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this."

Google Maps Update!

I went to Google Maps today and noticed something really cool. They added Satellite a while back, but nothing beats their latest, "Hybrid". Not only is it a satellite map, it includes the biggest labels on the map in a map. Check out my current location in full-style Hybrid.

Burning A Hole In My Pocket

My Next iPodFor a while now, I've been thinking about getting a new iPod. Mine's over two years old and it's running better than ever now that I put a new battery in it. But, the 30GB of space is not enough for me now that I'm officially a music snob.

Optimus Keyboard

Who doesn't want one of these? Of course, all respectible geeks want a keyboard that lights up, but what about a keyboard where the buttons change depending on what program you're using? The
Optimus keyboard even has a left side bank of keys that can be customizable to load any program and it puts the icon right on the key! It's all through the power of beautiful LCDs.

A Smart Coaster

It's in a networking magazine, but it's even more proof that I want to go to Cedar Point in Ohio. Not only does the roller coaster top 400 feet, but it uses a large computer to figure out exactly the speed it should launch at so that you get the most enjoyable ride. Of course, that's not the only reason I want to go because it's The Roller Coaster Capital of the World.

The Podcasting Conundrum

Recently I've been getting into the latest phenomenon: podcasting. It's basically downloadable radio shows that I can put on my iPod if desired. (Right now I mostly listen to them on my computer, but I can forsee myself loading up my iPod and listening on the way to work.)

Thanks, Sprint!

I just have to give a big shout-out to Sprint PCS for finally getting a much-needed tower up. I have been living in the west end of St. Paul, Minnesota for most of a year now, and here in the southwest corner it's a battle to keep a Sprint connection. I had to practice finding the one spot in my room where I could get a signal. But all those problems are finished.

Open Source Has Features

I use many Open Source software tools in my day-to-day life, but I know I could use more. Right now I use PHP, Apache, MySQL, Drupal, WordPress, and may others, mostly related to my website design business.

Mac OS X on my Dell?

Will it happen?

According to this news report, on Monday at the WWDC conference in San Francisco, Apple's Steve Jobs is supposed to announce a phased transition to Intel instead of IBM's PowerPC processors. Why the change? Well, one thing I'm suspecting is a lot of money from Intel as a part of the deal.

FunnyFox

If there were no good reasons to Get FireFox before, now there is. Head over to FunnyFox to see why!

Hiring is Obsolete

OK, so for me it's mostly preaching to the choir. I currently don't like hiring people, although I try to be as kind to them as possible because they hold the key to a job. It's not that I hate them personally, I just hate the rules that say that I'm not worth hiring. I just hate the fact that I have to kiss up to them and say exactly what they want to hear, even if it's not true. I'd rather say it like it is, thus we both know what we're getting into.

Dunno

Well, I don't know if it was a virus or just the hard drive malfunctioning, but whatever it was, it was bad. I ended up buying a new hard drive to get up and running as soon as possible. But I am currently chatting with Dell Support and they'll send me a replacement for the old hard drive. So, now I got tons of space!

Is This Some Kind Of CHALLENGE!?!

So, once again, either God or myself have given me a computer challenge. Earlier this afternoon my computer contracted a virus, shut down before I could fix it, and then obviously wouldn't restart Windows. So, now I have the challenge of fixing it. If I knew what the virus was....

Kids, remember never to play around with e-mails that you don't know where they are from. Some will give your computer viruses!

How Lightsabers Work

The factual website How Stuff Works has a great article on How Lightsabers Work. Very informative, and very useful for those technology users who always wanted to know.

Ode To Netflix

Alright, folks, it's time time. For a couple weeks now I've been trying out Neflix, the original online movie rental company. And, well, so far, it's great.

For $14.96 I get to rent two movies at a time. I can basically rent as many as I can squeeze into a month, for whenver you send them a movie back, they send the next available one in my Queue of movies I want to see. They pay for the postage, and within two days of sending one in, I get a new one. Nice, fast turnaround.

John Cleese Knows Funny

Now for some geeky humor...

Problems with tape backup have been in the news a bunch recently, so John Cleese (of Monty Python fame) comes to the rescue. He heads up the Institute for Backup Trauma, and here they present this ad. It's not funny the whole time, but it's pretty good.

And the brothers Chaps better get a H*R update sometime soon....

We're All Gonna Die!

According to those who study space (but not the astrologers), the earth may have a massive crisis on its hands in 2034 or so. A huge asteriod may hit us, but they're not really sure. The good news is we'll get a good look at the asteriod in 2029.
