Album Of The Day: Homecoming by Sandra McCracken

Album Art of Sandra McCracken's Homecoming EP - An impressionist-style painting of a green field full of flowers with a partly cloudy sky above it is the three quarters of the area. The field has long grasses and flowers, plus some trees on the edges of the field and a hill far off in the background. The brushstrokes are visible and the colors vibrant. At the bottom, there's a deep blue solid color, and printed on that in large letters is the EP's title in light blue, with the artist's name in a smaller font in light yellow.

Released this past Friday, this is the 2nd EP by folk-rock singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken. She has been making music for over 25 years and has released 15 solo albums and a few EPs collaborating with other artists, but this is the first time I'm aware of that she has collaborated with a living theologian. This past spring, as Anglican bishop and religious scholar N.T. Wright was finishing up his God's Homecoming book, Sandra was able to spend some time with him and work to co-write some songs using the ideas in this book. It's only 6 songs, but this EP is some excellent songs based on the Biblical idea that God's plan is to create his kingdom with us here on earth. (There's a lot more detail on this concept in the book and I highly recommend you read it if at all interested.) This recording's lyrics inspire me to work on making this earth a better place and be a "God revealer" to others and it makes me long for that day when we are united with God. Sandra McCracken has worked with dead theologians and hymn-writers in the past; she has remade their hymn lyrics into more modern folk-rock songs. These songs have a similar feel, as they are deep spiritual statements of belief. This EP has been touching me a lot this week.
