Album Of The Day: The Anatomy Of The Tongue In Cheek by Relient K

Album Art of Relient K's The Anatomy Of The Tongue In Cheek album - On the bottom and taking up most of the space, a black-and-white photo of four young men standing in front a brick wall painted white. Across the top, a white bar that has the band's name printed on the right in large, all-caps international orange letters. To the right, in much smaller, thinner letters is the album title. In a gray strip below that is printed the track listing, then 'No. 2' vertically, and then four individual photos of each band member's face.

"Maybe it is them / Maybe it is me / Or maybe it's Maybeline" Released 25 years ago tomorrow, this is the second album by pop/punk band Relient K. This was the first album that made me a fan of Relient K, and showed a lot of promise beyond just a punk band. A few parts of this album have Beach Boys-eque harmonies, and there's a lot of musical styles here though punk is the main style still. The first single to Christian radio, "Pressing On", is an excellent song to kick off the album with lots of gusto. And "Sadie Hawkins Dance" immediately became a favorite of every church youth group ever about a high school boy being asked to the dance. There's lots of funny bits too, like a song with mostly just horse puns and a tribute to the leader of the ThunderCats, an '80s cartoon TV show. Beyond the silly, though, there's a lot of thoughts provided by Matthew Thiessen and the team on life and Christianity like a reminder that "Jesus loved the outcasts" and that Christians too often point the finger at others for their problems. And it closes with a beautiful piano ballad "Less Is More"... at least before the little hidden track about their love for Skittles and Combos. The band went on to record even more successful albums and become even more pop, but I still love this album that started it all for me.
