Album Of The Day: Falling Down by Steve

Album Art of Steve's Falling Down album - A photo of four white, young men that is upside down. The grass is on top, and the sky on the bottom. The camera is pretty close to the grass, and the band is looking towards the camera. The man in the middle is leaning down towards the camera, and his necktie is hanging from his neck over his left ear to make you wonder which way is up or down. At the bottom, it has the band name in a white, bubbly font with a black border. Then to the right of that it has album title in slightly smaller, black text.

Released 25 years ago this Friday, this is the only major recording by Britpop band Steve. Neil Wilson and his mates craft alternative rock with excellent musicianship and catchy melodies. The lyrics are definitely Christian, with lots of references in the lyrics about friendship with God. But even so, it sounds like this band probably rocked out in bars/clubs as well as church social halls and basements. Songs like "Zealous Core", "My Ever My All" and "Divine Design" keep the band rockin' and the listener tapping their toes. And songs like "Fine", "Smile" and "I Am Here" are slower songs that also speak of God's love and have a good groove. This is one of those albums I forgot about for a while in the past few decades, but then every once in a while I find it again and fall in love with this band all over. (Yes, the streaming services have the album cover erroneously rotated 180 degrees and mine is correct.) It seems like the band continued to play in the UK for a few years and never made it in the USA like they hoped due to September 11th shutting down the country shortly after this album released.
