Album Of The Day: Third Day by Third Day

Album Art of Third Day's self-titled album - A photo of the front of an old bus with a Georgia license plate. The contents of the photo around the bus have been whited out, and some parts of the bus have been replaced with other photos. For example, the left window on the front of the bus is replaced with a photo of a peach, and the right window is a photo of a blue-grey sky with bare tree branches stretching up into the sky. The front grille area is replaced with a photo that includes a gold background and a black sign that says, 'This Sale 0.04'. Some of the headlights are also replaced with photos of flames. The sign on the top of the bus says the band name, 'Third Day'.

"If you can't say something good / Don't say nothing at all." Released 30 years ago today, this is the first album from Atlanta-based southern rock band Third Day. The band formed a few years before (an early front-runner for band name was "Nuclear Hoedown") and some of this album was recorded in the few years before and released independently before this major label release. It's not my favorite album from them, but it's definitely in my top 5 of their albums. This self-titled debut showed Third Day as a force to be reckoned with in the Christian rock world, at least until they took a pop/worship turn a few years later. Songs like "Take My Life", "Thief" and "Love Song" showed a quieter side to the band and signer Mac Powell's vocals are an excellent, gravelly vibe. But I love the more rockin' stuff, like "Consuming Fire", "Blackbird", "Mama" and "Forever", as it's got great rock guitar, drums, and bass. And wow, "Did You Mean It?" has a very U2 sound to it. Rich Mullins played hammer dulcimer on the final track, "Praise Song", as well. This album is quality rock with pretty simple production and Christian lyrics and an excellent start for a long-running band. It was fun to see them play a few months ago, though they didn't play enough rockin' music for this old time fan.
