Album Of The Day: Comfort Eagle by Cake

Album Art of Cake's Comfort Eagle album - On a beige background, there's a brown-and-white line drawing of a woman and a man holding cocktails and talking. The man has short hair and the woman has longer hair. The man's suit coat is black, while the woman's dress is white, and the illustration just doesn't show their legs or any background. Behind the drawing is printed a light, aqua blue star with a white drop shadow. And there's a white border around the whole image. At the top it says the band name in large, uppercase letters, and the album title is printed in a script font at the bottom, both in the dark brown of the line drawing.

"So you'll be an Austrian nobleman / Commissioning a symphony in C." Released 25 years ago yesterday, this is the fourth studio album from alternative rock band Cake. I've definitely heard a bunch of this album before and recently got a CD of it from a friend who was getting rid of their music collection, but I've not actually listened to this whole album until today, I think. There's a few songs about writing and performing music, though not about the rock variety: "Opera Singer" and "Commissioning A Symphony In C". I'm most familiar with "Short Skirt/Long Jacket", a song about the type of woman the songwriter likes; the bass-filled instrumental riff was used for the theme music of the action/romance/comedy TV series "Chuck". To me, Cake has a rather unique sound, with pronounced bass, the use of trumpets and nods to a lot of musical styles. Plus, the lyrics are often sarcastic and the vocals delivered rather deadpan and non-enthused. It's pretty dark, lyrically, but the music sounds so cheery, and it piques my interest a bit.
